In 2020, many people encountered online performance for the first time. “Before the first” is a brief glimpse of the diversity of online performance created before 2020. My first online performance was in 2001 when I performed a character I called Paycheck, a (terrible) performance poet, who did standup in the Firebirdz Palace of The Palace.
